It was during a food-fuelled trip to Puglia in 2019 that my wife and I had an epiphany–we wanted to open a restaurant in London. So my career as engineer took a backseat as we worked to turn this dream into a reality–and our passion for Italian cuisine was just the beginning!
When viewing potential locations for our project, we instantly fell in love with our current site in Tufnell Park. We took the lease and decided to do something bold: we wanted to combine the flavours of our favourite cuisines, Indian and Italian.
We opened just before the first lockdown in 2020 and it hasn’t exactly been a smooth ride. Customers didn’t warm up to the concept immediately, but we slowly won them over with our passion, quality ingredients and–most importantly–our incredible flavours.
In 2021, business was struggling due to the impact of Covid-19, but we were thrown a lifeline. We were invited to take part in the BBC programme Britain’s Best Takeaways and after a fierce culinary battle, we took the crown as Best Pizza Takeaway in the country. Suddenly we had curious diners lining up to try our legendary food!
Now in 2023, we’re still serving up our exciting menu of Neapolitan style pizzas with vibrant Indian sauces and toppings alongside a selection of small plates of food that I personally love. We’re also still working with quality local suppliers to ensure that we source the best, freshest ingredients.
While the menu sometimes changes, our pizza dough remains the same. We still make it in the traditional Neapolitan style with a minimum of 48-hour proof. We use authentic Caputo rosso flour for a longer proof time and a dough body to stand up to both our traditional and unconventional range of toppings.
While the menu might take a while to get used to, believe me when I say ‘just jump in’! Once you try our food, you’ll understand what we’re doing here at East West. And you’ll be hooked.
